Aggregates

Aggregates are of two main types – crushed rock and sand and gravel. Some examples of their use include hard-core for use under concrete slabs and footpaths, infill for roads and drainage stone on farms. In addition aggregates are a key ingredient in the manufacture of ready-mixed concrete and precast concrete products.

European product standards (ENs) have been developed for the production of aggregates by the European body, CEN. These product standards have been adopted for use in CEN member states, including Ireland. The standards for aggregates, which are all available for purchase from the N.S.A.I, include the following;

  • I.S. EN 12620:2002 – Aggregates for concrete;

  • I.S. EN 13043: 2002 – Aggregates for bituminous mixtures and surface treatments for roads, airfields and other trafficked areas;

  • I.S. EN 13242: 2002 – Aggregates for unbound and hydraulically bound materials for use in civil engineering work and road construction;

  • I.S. EN 13139:2002+NA 2010 – Aggregates for mortar.

In addition, national guidance has been produced by expert stakeholder groups within the N.S.A.I. The guidance is usually produced in the form of Standard Recommendations (S.R) which are also available from the N.S.A.I and examples include the following:

  • S.R. 16 – Guidance on the use of I.S. EN12620:2002 – Aggregates for concrete;

  • S.R. 17 – Guidance on the use of I.S. EN 13043- Aggregates for Bituminous Materials;

  • S.R. 18 – Guidance on the use of I.S. EN 13139:2002 + NA 2010 – Aggregates for mortar;

  • S.R. 21:2014+A1:2016 – Guidance on the use of I.S. EN 13242:2002+A1:2007 – Aggregates for unbound and hydraulically bound materials for use in civil engineering work and road construction. (Note: Annex E of S.R. 21:2014+A1:2016 provides guidance on aggregates for use as hardcore under concrete slabs and footpaths). I.S 888 – “Code of Practice for the Procurement and Use of Unbound Granular Fill Hardcore Material for Use under Concrete Floors” outlines requirements for the procurement, haulage, delivery and receipt, storage and handling, placing, traceability, and record management of S.R. 21 – Annex E material.

Below please find ICF guidance documents on S.R 16, S.R 21 and I.S 888.
